Introduction

Maharashtra State Seed Corporation Limited, Akola, carries out seed production program of various crops / varieties during kharif / rabi season through about fifty thousand seed growers on an area of about 2.5 lakh acres every year. For this, basic seeds are distributed in a disciplined manner and the seed production area is monitored from time to time at the farmer level. Attempts are also made to make high quality seeds available to the farmers within the stipulated time by implementing seed quality campaigns. These seed growers are encouraged to produce high quality seeds through fair rates, incentives for meeting targets or increased rates on quality basis etc.

As National Food Security is of paramount importance, the Corporation mainly produces a large number of seeds of low cost crops, including cereals, oilseeds, hemp crops, green leafy crops, fodder crops and unparalleled white gold (cotton crops).

Every year Mahabeej produces more than 10 lakh quintals of certified / authentic seeds and 1.20 to 1.50 lakh quintals of basic seeds along with vegetable crops.

Various schemes under seed production program:

Under the Village Seed Production Program, a scheme called "Village Seed Production Program" has been implemented by the Corporation for organizing consecutive seed production areas in a village. In this scheme 100%, 75% and 50% discount is given in the fee of seed certification system according to the area organized by the corporation. Similarly, in order to promote seed production in Maharashtra, schemes are regularly implemented to attract seed growers for quality seed production programs of various hybrids and straight varieties.:

  1. Seed Growers Program Registration fee is waived for seed growers who participate in the advance reservation scheme.
  2. Area inspection fee is waived for continuous area registration.
  3. Special incentive amount scheme for high quality seed production.

Considering the demand for certified pulses, oilseeds and cereals under the National Food Security Mission, for the distribution of certified seeds under this scheme through Mahabeej, pulses include green gram, urad, tur and gram etc. Therefore, it has helped in increasing the seed conversion rate in these crops.

The Corporation is producing large quantity of seeds of new varieties in cereals, pulses and oilseeds. Therefore, it is helping to increase the productivity per hectare of this crop.
